HP G60 laptop battery issues

Asked by Matthew Gertsch

Ubuntu is having issues with reading and responding to battery life and charging correctly. Generally, it attempts to shut down at 2/3 battery life, telling me that it's going to go into hibernation mode. Clicking on 'cancel' does no good, it still shuts down, performing a full shut down. It does this again at approximately 1/3 battery life.

The battery life time will consistently tell me that there is less battery life than there actually is and update itself from time to time, usually when the timer gets down to about 5 minutes. This doesn't seem to coincide with the shutdown issue.

The full shutdown also occurs any time the computer is taken off of the power supply and switches to battery power.

All data is lost each time the computer powers down.

If I remember correctly, HP had a fix for this for Windows Vista as a 'hotfix'.

Beside the bugs which are already reported regarding the issue on variants of laptops, in the meantime verify power-settings, there is an option what to do on critical battery state (here it's just left empty).
Via dash - applications is also a tool called something like power-statistics to investigate the un-load cycles or just use powertop via terminal.
Anyway I'd consider this as unexpected, (here the HP laptop doesn't have those issues).

In case consider to report a bug since there're variants of hardware out there.

I'm an ubernewb I haven't used command lines since Windows was a DOS program.

I've got the system monitor up and I'm looking at processes, but I don't see anything battery related. I also have no idea how to get to the 'run application' window.

Please open a terminal: ctrl+alt+t
Enter:
lsb_release -r

and post output. Thanks.

Reporting bugs says:

"Filing a general bug against no particular package

If you're not sure which package is affected by the bug, type ubuntu-bug in the "Run Application" window and click Run. This will guide you through a series of questions to gather more information about the bug. "

Because it's not listed, I click on 'other problem'. I get a prompt that "You need to specify a package or a PID. See --help for more information."

Bugs/FindingRightPackage says:

"Suspend, Hibernate, and Resume

Suspend, hibernate, and resume functionality is provided by three different packages:

    gnome-power-manager (in Ubuntu and Edubuntu) is responsible for setting policy on when the system should be suspended or resumed and signalling the system to do so. "

When I try to run 'gnome-power-manager' I get told, 'command not found'.

I'm finding a couple other questions involving 11.10 and Turion X2 64s, only these were on Toshibas.

"cat /etc/lsb-release" gets me this:

DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=11.10
DISTRIB_CODENAME=oneiric
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 11.10"

Had you just asked me what version I was running, I could have told you it was 11.10.

Thanks. I'm sure you could (from beginning).
The output makes it a little easier, since we also get answers like 'don't know' or being told a false release number.

Bugs regarding hibernate, suspend and such can be reported for example against acpi, as the header of this question already suggests.

70% battery remaining, power management estimates ~1hr. battery life:

This is certainly worth a look at power-settings configuration.
You can open 'system-settings' from launcher, from top panel or via terminal:
gnome-control-center

Changing power settings does nothing. There isn't even a 'do nothing' option for low battery states. I've been using computers since the late '80s. Checking the power settings goes without saying.

Please stop marking this solved unless you've provided information to solve the problem.

ACPI seems up to date.

The BIOS may be outdated, but Phoenix tells me to get updates from www.esupport.com who in turn requires me to download and use some utility that will only run on Windows. I'm finding info online about other distros having problems with ACPI and outdated BIOS versions, so I suspect that is the issue.

A proper bug report was sent last night. We'll see how that goes.

I've got emails out to Phoenix and eSupport, we'll see what comes of that, as well.

Matthew, the only person who can set the question as solved is you.

I'm not. I'm submitting new info using the, "I'm providing more information," option.

You can call me Matt. From what I can gather from collecting little bits of info here and the interwebz is that ACPI needs a later BIOS.

Matt, as in the bug report requested, go there:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/

Then click on the latest mainline kernel for Oneiric (scroll all away down):
[DIR] v3.2-rc4-oneiric/

You'll get to this page:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.2-rc4-oneiric/

Download the image and headers for your architecture, which is x86_64.
[ ] linux-image-3.2.0-030200rc4-generic_3.2.0-030200rc4.201112012035_amd64.deb
[ ] linux-headers-3.2.0-030200rc4-generic_3.2.0-030200rc4.201112012035_amd64.deb

Lets say you've downloaded them into ~/Downloads, then open a terminal: ctrl+alt+t
cd ~/Downloads

Verify the image and headers file are there:
ls -al

If they're there install them:
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds?action=show&redirect=KernelMainlineBuilds#Installing_Mainline_Kernels

The output of grub.cfg should display the new kernel 3.2rc4

In case verify they'll be displayed in grub menu update grub:
sudo update-grub

If all is positive reboot:
sudo reboot

## If you'd like to view the grub menu after boot press [Shift] key.

Can you help with this problem?
