suspend mode makes asus laptop sleeps for ever

Asked by JohanK

Suspend or sleeping mode turns screen to black with OS Ubuntu 11.10 on a Asus K72F laptop and can not wake up again.
Harddisk indicator does not turn off.
Also when I use the key combination Fn + Z <F1> the same happens.
The only solution is to push the power button and start up the the laptop again.

EDIT:
bug also appears on asus k54ly, i had to turn off suspension and sleep mode just to close the lid!!

I recommend reporting this as a bug. To do that, first make sure to read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs carefully. Then search to see if it has already been reported. Then file the bug by running "ubuntu-bug linux". Fill out the report with details about the problem and how to trigger it. Your bug report should be complete and self-contained, such that it is not necessary for an Ubuntu developer to refer to this question in order to fully understand and appreciate the problem. Nonetheless, you should link the bug and this question together using "Link existing bug" on this question page.

i think the problem is caused by AMD proprietary drivers!!
i only tried it in 10.04, where i have the same problem that only presents itself when the drivers are activated.
i'll try on 11.10 as soon as i upgrade again.

When returning from sleep mode, Asus G74sx, the state of the on-board mouse finger pad gets re-enabled and must be turned off each time. when the onboard mouse pad is disabled so an USB mouse can be used. when sleep then return, the state is not remembered and the mouse pad must be disabled again.
