With upgrading to 11.10, shutting down and restarting not possible.

Asked by Asoka Dissanayake

Having upgraded to 11.10 from 11.04, shutting down or restarting the computer is not possible. In trying to resolve the issue, tried removing some programs (e.g. the default Deja Dup backup tool) to see whether they cause the problem. But that does not seem to be the cause.

Can log in and off through "Switch User" function but log out and log off is not possible. All users including the Administrator are having the problem. I guess this must be a bug, although I am unable to explain it technical terms.

As a remedy what I am doing is hybernate and later switch power off. System Information: GNU/Linux 3.0.0-12-generic i686. Hardware: Intel C2Duo 2.9 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 320 GB HDD.

Tried various commands through the Terminal but the message " command not found " appeared.

The correct command to shut down from a terminal is

sudo shutdown -h now

You didn't say what happens when you try to shutdown 11.10 normally. If you press the power button and release it immediately then it should bring up the shutdown menu. Is the shutdown icon missing from the top panel? If not, what happens (exactly) when you tell the machine to shutdown?

Can you shut down from the lightdm screen after you log out? You can force a logout from X by pressing <ctrl><alt><Backspace>. Does this work and can you then shutdown from lightdm (login screen)

how did you try shutting it down?
did you use the power button in the top right corner?
what happens when you tried to shut it down?
please provide specific details.

Thanks. The issue is solved now. I was using "sudo restart" instead of "sudo reboot" and that is why there was no response I think. After rebooting a couple of times and tweaking with some packages in Synaptic, the problem was over. Yet, I am following it up and if a change occurs, will let you know, for information.

For the time being the issue is solved.

Thanks for the response. The issue has now been resolved. I found that
using sudo restart is not valid. The correct command is sudo reboot
(learned from help pages). Later the problem was solved. Also did some
package installations and updates and those may have helped. So for the
moment, the issue is resolved. Thanks again. Will keep in touch if
similar situation is experienced again.

Well now I find that the issue is still present in respect of just one user (non-administrator) who is not authorised to use 'sudo'. Trying workarounds. This is for information and will keep reporting about it.

Yes, using 'shutdown' from the command line is not an ideal solution if you have a normal user who also logs in. If you're happy to give that user administrative rights you could add them to the administrator group and that should do it.

As someone had suggested in these forums, I did some tweaking and finally removed the Guest Account. After that the problem is gone! How it happened? Don't know. Now the problem is solved. Thanks for all your ideas and suggestions.
