unable to shutdown using gui

I still have the problem that when I click on 'Shut Down', I get the box that has 'Restart, Shut Down etc.'. I click 'Shut Down' and instead of shutting down, I get the log in page. I am not able to Shut Down without physically pressing the ON/Off button. Any suggestions.

If you run:

sudo shutdown -h now

Does it shutdown?

Hi actionparsnip,

I am unable to run those commands. The laptop will not let me. When I do, I get 'Incorrect login' and then another line wanting username and password. So to shut down I need to press the ON/OFF button of the laptop. If there are any other suggestions please let me know.

My shut-down problem seems to have fixed itself as yesterday when I got finished with the laptop I automatically clicked on 'shut down', got the window with 'Restart, Shut-down etc.', and when I clicked on shut down, it actually shut down. Has been working fine since. So this problem is also solved. Thanks for everyone's help.
