Displays code scrolling when reopening after sleep

Asked by Michael MacKenzie

Ubuntu 11:10 set to sleep when inactive. When I reopen by pushing on the start button on the HP tower, the screen displays fast-scrolling code and nothing else. I have had a wireless network active, but there are no other units nearby. I press and hold the start/stop button on the tower to turn the cpu off, then restart with no further incident.

Oneiric Ocelot (which will be released as Ubuntu 11.10) is still in Alpha 3. It is still highly unstable, and bugs are expected. You can help it improve by reading https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs carefully, then searching to see if this bug has already been reported and, if not, filing a report (start the report by running "ubuntu-bug linux" and important information will be automatically attached). You should make sure to describe the problem in detail, and include the make and model of your computer. You should also include the text that appears on the screen when you restore your computer from sleep, if possible. If you have the means to do so, you could even take a picture of the screen and attach the image to your bug report. If this only happens when you are connected to a wireless network, you should make sure to mention that. Your bug report should be complete and self-contained; it should not be necessary to for Ubuntu developers to refer to this question page in order to fully understand and appreciate your bug. However, it is still useful to link your bug (or a bug you find for this) to this question; you can do that with "Link existing bug" on this question page.

Holding down your power button to perform a hard reset is an absolute last resort--it is less damaging to restart your computer using Alt+SysRq+REISUB (or Alt+SysRq+REISUO to shut down, though that may or may not effect a power-off). See http://kember.net/articles/reisub-the-gentle-linux-restart/ for details about how to do this and, if you're interested, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_SysRq_key for information about how it works and what it does.

One of the benefits of using Alt+SysRq+REISUB is that it will try to finish up any unfinished low-level disk write operations. So the information that is automatically attached to your bug report may be more complete if you rebooted from the most recent crash using Alt+SysRq+REISUB rather than by holding down your power button. Therefore, you should reproduce the problem and reboot in this way, before filing your bug report.

Since you've been doing repeated hard-resetting of your machine with your power button, filesystem corruption may have occurred, and it is advisable to check your disk with fsck (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SystemAdministration/Fsck).

Can you help with this problem?
