Ubuntu 10.10 won't power down on shutdown

Asked by Michael F Baxter

On a computer upon which both Windows XP and AntiX Linux properly power down the computer during shutdown, Ubuntu 10.10 does not. Have tried unsuccessfully various online suggestions to alter grub boot parameters. Looking for a more likely solution. This old computer's 440LX motherboard does not support APM, but does support APIC.

Would be nice to describe which steps have been tried.
Maybe this?
e.g. /etc/default/grub
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="acpi=force"
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Configuring%20GRUB%202

Optional unplug usb.

Search for timestamp of shutdown in /var/syslog and verify if there're some hints.
System adminstration -> log file viewer

Yes, tried that as well as "acpi=force lapic", but neither solved the issue.

Forgot to run update-grub after changing the grub defaults.
