Asus notebook fans surging with 11.04 beta - out of control!

Asked by scott anderson

Not sure where to start - running 10.10 Asus g73jh Intel, Intel ssd 80gb hd, 6gb ram, this thing runs quiet and cool! Install 11.04 and - fans surging wildly - up high / low / high / low approximately 1 minute intervals - EXTREME heat from back panel - reboot to 10.10 - no problems, run system monitor, cannot see issues? CPU numbers, processes seem normal - possible video? None-the-less it's making some DOUBLE mean heat!

Had to logout of 11.04 and jump into 10.10 - I could "smell" the heat coming from my system. Since rebooting, about 5 minutes of run time, haven't heard the fans at all. Something unhealthy is cooking IMO, will be happy to assist, keeping it up (installed not running) for testing as needed....

Linux asus 2.6.38-3-generic #30-Ubuntu SMP Thu Feb 10 00:33:26 UTC 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

rebooted gathered more info - install hwinfo and dumped to file if needed....

Running ATI graphics and proprietary drivers in 10.10 - all is well. Note, this occurs with NO user activity, just boot and within 2 minutes, all heck breaks loose. It is REAL heat - meaning I can smell and feel it, fans and vents are double clean . I have been running it as sql / web server, 3d gaming and OpenOffice base for work. I cannot PUSH it to get hot with previous installs. It has never shut down but my sense of smell and touch tell me it's not a happy camper...

well, beta means experimental and there will be lots of problems, which you've mentioned one. you should log a bug but clicking log a bug at the bottom of the screen.

Also, 11.04 is not in Beta, it's in Alpha 2 (which means even more experimental and even more problems).

Correct on Alpha 2 - I was posting the message in Alpha 2 and as I was typing, the issue became increasingly prevalent to the point of "smell", hence I dropped out and came back to further my message, only to realise I hadn't copied any information as to my install. Bottom line, shot myself in the foot in a hurry, however my biggest concern is for those who may or may not "sense" the issue and smoke some hardware... THANKS for all the replies / answers...
