ubuntu 10.10 not shutting down

Asked by Jane Lenz

Just installed 10.10 but have a problem; press shutdown; confirm shutdown; nothing happens. Must push the power button to shut the pc down. Running on a pc purchased in 2000 (HP Pavilion 743); no dual boot. Tried
Code:
gksudo gedit /etc/modules
Then add this as the bottom line:
Code:
apm power_off=1
Now it works sometimes. You help will be appreciated. Thank you. Jane

Hi Jane

Do you have the OpenOffice.org quickstarter running. If you do, then click on its icon in the toolbar and select Exit Quickstarter. Then shut down. If it is successful, then you have this bug:-

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/lucid/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/562027.

There is a workaround in the description of the bug. Or you can always close the OpenOffice.org quickstarter before you shut down.

Tony

OO.o Quick Starter running. Shutting down and / or removing from panel solved the problem. I can still keep OO.o
Writer on the panel with no problem.

You do a great job. Thanks so much.

Jane
