Computer no longer wakes from suspend

I'm running ubuntu 10.10 on an hp pavilion 9620. For some reason, the computer no longer wakes from suspend. When I try to take it from suspend, all I get is wierd globby gray stuff on the screen, and nothing else.. I have to completely restart the computer from the power switch, and when the computer finally boots; there is weird graphics things going on here and there, like a strange line across the top of the screen and the dock looks funny. The bizarre graphics issues only lasts a few minutes, but are alarming nevetheless. The graphics issues also appear after a normal reboot that was not after one of the suspend-fails.
Also, at the exact same time that all these issues started occurring; I've also began having problems in my software center, when I try to uninstall any package, I now get this warning "Package Operation Failed
The installation or removal of a software package failed."

This all started at the same time. No Joke. Thanks in advance for any help!!

try:

gksudo gedit /etc/default/acpi-support

go to:
POST_VIDEO=
and set it to:
POST_VIDEO=false

and find:
SAVE_VBE_STATE=true
and set it to:
SAVE_VBE_STATE=false

Save the new file and reboot, then test

didn't work. In fact, now the problem is evolving into myself having to reboot the computer even more times because when it comes back from full reboot after another suspend-fail; the screen is in crazy order and the mouse doesn't know where it's at.

ok then change the file back.

Suspend / Hibernate is REALLY hard to get working. Are there any bugs created for the model of laptop and suspend etc.

Sorry about that.. I didn't mean to submit that three times. In a way, I resolved that issue. I reinstalled Ubuntu.. I wanted to tone down my configuration and just figured that to be the easiest way.. So, I'm not having that problem anymore.
