can't shut down computer

Asked by sciencequeen

When I go to the top bar and click on the icon of the computer, and click on "Shut down..." it logs me out instead. I've tried this a few times, and even clicked on the little power button icon in the log in screen which also brought up "Shut down..." but that was completely not responsive.

I don't know how to try the commands from the terminal. I don't know how to login as root, even though I know I can because I'm the only user of my computer.

Thanks.

Please try to shutdown using a terminal so open a terminal and type:

shutdown -h now

please tell if it works

Then please tell us the brand and model of your pc...

Then also consider to upgrade your pc bios...

It doesn't work but only because it says I need to be root. (Which is what I stated above I don't know how to do, but I know that I can login as root).

I don't know how to tell you what my computer is. It was assembled for me by a friend and I don't know the terminal commands to tell you.

I don't think I need to upgrade my pc bios. I can't see why I would need to do that all of a sudden. My computer's not that old...I only got it in January.

I'm pretty sure it's just Ubuntu being whacked and I lack the command knowledge to fix it myself.
