Cannot Shutdown - select Shutdown & system Restarts

Asked by MarkK

Every time select ShutDown from panel, system Restarts instead - cannot ShutDown system. I've tried both Ubuntu v9.04 & 9.10 (primary/only OS) on Gateway laptop (M305-CRV)and cannot resolve problem. Yanking the battery to get the laptop to shut down is getting tiresome!

Clarification: Laptop = Gateway M305-CRV; currently using Ubuntu v9.04. Is this a GDM or ACPI problem? Thanks!

One thing I can recommend you try instead of pulling the battery.... When your system is finished shutting down and has started up again....

Hold the power button for 10 seconds. This may power off the machine without having to pull the battery.

That may save you some time.

Next,

Next time you want to shut down, try this instead of using the panel.... (just to troubleshoot some more of what the problem is)

Open a terminal up, (click on the ubuntu symbol in the top left, click accessories, click terminal)

enter this command...

sudo /sbin/shutdown -h now

Let me know if that shuts down your system instead of rebooting it.

Thank You. Tried your first suggestion - system continues with Restart (power button has no effect at any point); will try second suggestion (shutdown via terminal command).

sudo /sbin/shutdown -h now did not work. Same result: system went into shutdown (no screen freeze, etc.) but then immediately cycled into reboot/restart.

This hardware has been around for a while - I really would hate to have to load Microcrap OS just so that I can turn off my computer.

Again - any further suggestions? Help is appreciated.

Upgrading laptop's BIOS to Phoenix 38.01.07 version solved the problem. Sam - thanks for the references.

I have the same problem with XUBUNTU v11.04

Shutting down is basic, the button goes to a login screen, before making a distro basics should be tested.

There is some type of add some lines of code to a .xinit etc crap...great for programmers, the file wont even let me save to it...why do I have to learn programming ?

Not an apply fan nor microslopware, BUT Apple has the right slogan "IT JUST WORKS"
