Windows Port

Asked by Eric Hooks

To Whom It May Concern,

I hope this is in the right section. If not, I apologize. I am a college student and I need a project to show my potential skills for Graduate school. I am inquiring about permission to make a Windows port of 3dchess. I do not wish to reference the source code of the application in any way, I just want to make a Windows version of the game using the rules only. I will not be using any commercial libraries to right this port, just C++ and the Win32 API. I do not wish to sell the ported application for profit, though I would like to be able to distribute it freely for anyone to play. I am happy to place it under the GPL license and I am happy to include credit to the original creators.

Thank you for your consideration and/or pointing me in the right direction for who I need to contact.

At first: we do not make license decisions here. We help Ubuntu users.

The license of 3dchess is rather clear. You can read it at http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-branches/ubuntu/trusty/3dchess/trusty/view/head:/GPL .
It's the GPLv2. You have follow it's rules. Means: you have to give out the source code (3.) and name the authors (2.)

In my personal opinion your request implies a lack of unserstanding of the GPL and Open Source in general.
If you violate the GPL it will be a rather bad demonstration of your skills.

Can you help with this problem?
