unkown process that changes pid is it a problem?

Asked by David BIrch

Ubuntu 9.10 pointer on Desktop shows constant activity, system monitor shows unknown process running intermittently, and it frequently changes pid.
I feel suspicious of this.
Tried scanning, bitdefender, avast etc reinstall root partition.
file system:
/swap

Process name ; (no entry/blank)
user ; root
status ; sleeping
%cpu ; 0
Nice ; 0
ID ; (various)
memory ; N/A
waiting channel; (no entry/blank)

I had thought the changing ID might mean many different processes, but at reboot or shut down I often get " Unknown process running, shutdown anyway?".
