How to view a VISIO file?

Asked by Uqbar

I'd need to view a file produced with Microsoft VISIO.
Is there a way to do it?
Thanks.

You *might* have success with Kivio, but I don't know if it supports importing of Visio (or if yes, which versions etc). Kivio is available in the Ubuntu repositories
http://dot.kde.org/967910006/
http://packages.ubuntu.com/feisty/graphics/kivio

If all else fails, get the person creating the diagram for you to 'print to PDF' (free PDF printer drivers for Microsoft Windows are available at pdf995.com).

Nope.
Kivio v1.6.3 cannot import Visio files (.VSD) but just XML and Kivio files.
As I don't (want to) run Windows, I fear I cannot read that file.
What a pity!

Hello,

if you have a version of MS VISIO you should install this via Codeweavers crossover office. Or you should try to install the old viewer or VISIO via wine.

I've sent the file to a friend with Windows and Visio and asked him to print the diagram out.
No chances to do otherwise without buying Visio/Office.
What a pity.

I stumbled into this post, then found a solution, so I leave my 2 cent of knowledge for future googlers.

The site http://www.freepdfconvert.com/ allows you to translate one Visio file every 30 minutes (there is a time limit), freely and (as far as I can see) rather accurately.

If you have an occasional need of just reading a visio file on Ubuntu, I think it's the way to go, and it worked for me.
