Can not start HD with SaveGuard and WinXP

Asked by Michael Mueller

I installed Ubuntu on USB stick. I boot Ubuntu from USB Stick. I have WinXP on Harddisk encrypted with SaveGuard. Since my last Ubuntu update about 2 weeks ago I can not start my WinXP from Harddisk. I get: " GRUB loading..; error: no such disk". Even if I decide my HD on GRUB boot menue USB-Stick, after logon SaveGuard it said "error while access the harddisk". I tryed SaveGuard Repair but it's not working.

The notebook is my company notebook. I use ubuntu on USB stick for the times I travel because I don't want carry two notebooks. So I can use private configuration on company notebook and use it for privat in hotel. My company data is save on HD because SaveGuard. Ubuntu was working good on USB-stick.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs .

Hi Michael Mueller,
It sounds like you have let grub overwrite the MBR on your internal HDD. Please ensure your Ubuntu USB drive is not inserted & then follow the steps below to remove grub from your internal HDD & reload the default windows MBR:

Boot off your Windows XP CD.

1. Choose “Repair” (press "r").
2. If it asks for the installation number, put in “1″.
3. Enter Admin password if prompted.
4. At the command prompt type "fixboot", then confirm.
5. At the command prompt type “fixmbr”, then confirm. Windows will now overwrite the grub info in the MBR that Ubuntu put there.
6. Now type "exit" & remove your Windows XP cd.
7. Reboot!
