No Display / out of frequency (live CD)

Asked by Fedora Mike

When booting from the Ubuntu 7.04 install cd, I get a message on my display that says "out of frequency". This is a message entered by my display device and there is no output whatsoever for Ubuntu. I can get into text mode but am not sure what to do to fix this.
I have a Dell Dimension 8110
with a Radeon 9250 card and a
Envision EN7410e LCD display.
What should I do to get X11 to work?

Also, I am booting into safe display mode when this happens, as I get an Xserver error while booting into the default selection (#1) but it is basically unreadable by my display (the error message log)
Thanks

This error means that either your screen resolution or refresh rate are set too high.

To get ubuntu to install initially, i recomend using the alternative install ISO. Then, to get X working there is a guide here: http://www.hotubuntunews.com/blog_03.shtml

I attempted to install the alternate CD, but I want to explorer the LIVECD option first so I went back to the original CD. I installed and received the Xserver errors, so I ran dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg. I have two video card, one of which in not being used (install on the motherboard), and the other is the Radeon as mentioned above. I could not get it to accept any configurations. I think the part that I am stuck at is the BUS question. My card is located at 01:00.1 according to the lspci command. The configuration will not let me select that BUS, it is in the wrong format it says. By default, it comes up with the location for my stock video card which I am not using. My questions are:
Do I select ATI for the video card mfg?
When it asks for a description of this card, does it matter what I type or is this for info only?
How do I enter the BUS # for 01:00.1 ?
Thanks

BUS ID should be PCI:1:0:1
card mfg should indeed be ati (you will get the open source drivers).
If you want to test with restricted, I think you can try fglrx (I'm not 100% sure as I don't use them, its worth a try).

Sorry, I missed this one:

>When it asks for a description of this card

I guess this is the identifier as reported by the card. You will find it with lspci, in my case:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc R420 JP [Radeon X800XT]

And I have this in xorg.conf:

Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Technologies Inc R420 JP [Radeon X800XT]"

By the way, I should also mention that it really shouldn't matters what the identifier is, its just a label.

I was interested in using the LiveCD feature prior to installation. I am still unable to
get my display to work and cannot follow some of the advice given because it applies on while installing the operating system to my hard drive. Is there a work-around for the LiveCD?

Strange, you should be able to follow the advices; it shouldn't matter if you are running from the LiveCD. Of course if you reboot after the reconfiguration than you loose it.
Just use dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg or manually edit the xorg.conf file and start the x server (its a long time I don't do it but I think a startx or a "/etc/init.d/gdm start" would do). If this doesn't work let us know.

The problem I am having with the Alternate CD is that the only option I get is to install it. In other words, I don't see an option for a "run from cd" mode. Is there one?
I purchased an additional hard drive to add to my system for a linux flavour. I was opting for Fedora but wanted to try out Ubuntu first as another option. I am getting frustrated with the fact that I can not get it to work and have never had a problem like this with Fedora. Maybe it comes with more driver options, I don't know.

You were talking about the LiveCD, now you change to the Alternate CD which is a completely different beast. Indeed, there is no option to run Ubuntu from the Alternate CD. As the name indicates, it is not a LiveCD, you can only use it for installing.

I'm sorry, the first advie I received (from Matt) suggested using the alternate CD.
I tried the LiveCD but when I tried to do ---
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
It said that the package was not installed. I can and did edit the xorg.conf file and set
all to what was suggested previously, then i did a #startx, but I received the same errors as before. I am receiving my new hard drive today, I will use the alternatecd and install the system then try to get stuff to work. I will keep you posted.
Thanks for your help!!!!!

I was able to get it to work. My video card uses two bus id's, PCI:1:0:0 and PCI:1:0:1. The other video card is on the mother board and therefore isn't a PCI device. This is where I was confused. Anyway, it works great now, Thanks!!!!
