cannot install 7.04 on Z61m

Asked by harsha

Hi,
   I am trying to install Fiesty 7.04 on Z61m ATI 128Mb VRAM Intel Centrino 1.83GHz, the previous versions Dapper and Edgy installed pretty well, but with fiesty several new problems come up which didn't exist before :
- troube recognizing SATA drive
- installer not able to run graphics even in safe mode, the initial ubuntu logo displays fine but when gdm loads i get a error message saying X11 isn't configured well

i got around the first by changing a bios option (SATA from ACHI to compatibility mode)
and the second by using the alternate text install CD

However, the gdm still fails to load after installation is complete and when i start ubuntu. i get the same error message, a blue screen and X displaying the error

How should i configure the Xorg.conf file to make gdm work?
Also, can the above two annoyances be removed with a fiesty update especially as they didn't exist in the previous versions?

Hi, thanks for the reply, The problem is not just the ati driver, I am failing to see it at any resolution
X fails with a Caught signal 11 error.
this problem cant be because x is out of date as i just downloaded fiesty today,
Here are the links to
xorg.conf( http://www.esnips.com/nsdoc/8120d0a9-19e4-48be-8f01-9c4aad92c819)
and the error log, xorg.0.log( http://www.esnips.com/nsdoc/cd149740-dfab-4c89-a28b-68c68753f260 )
thanks,

apparently it is not possible to see the files posted at esnips because I have to register.

Did you try to install the ati driver by following the advice on the page I sent you :

$ apt-get update
$ apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx
$ depmod -a
$ aticonfig --initial

So the graphics driver problem is solved ?

It is best to open another question if you have another problem not related to the original question.

no, i meant that because internet wasn't configured, i wasn't able to get apt-get to work
right now, i am searching for some way of downloading it to windows and then copying the file
but is all this necessary even for plain graphics without 3d acceleration, because X is crashing after login itself with a signal 11 error
the strange thing is that with the previous versions, everything worked great, ubuntu recognized the ati card automatically
thanks for taking the time to reply to my messages

Hmm this is getting complicated.

Ok first you should know which version of the kernel you are using with this command:
uname -r

Next go to this page and click on the link with your corresponding kernel:
http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/restricted/l/

Next download the driver package.
It should be something like: xorg-driver-fglrx_7.1.0-8.37.6+2.6.22.2-8.3_i386.deb

You need to transfer this file to your Z61m.
Do you have a usb key ?

i can acess my windows drive, so i can copy the files to linux, i'll download the file right now.

ps: i saw this article and maybe this explains why going from edgy to fiesty is causing this problem for me, http://www.linux.com/articles/60222, atleast that mystery is cleared up

Ok once you transfered the package, you can install it with the dpkg command:

dpgk -i xorg-driver-fglrx*

It is possible that this package depends on another package which is not installed. If you have an error you may need to download manually other packages.
