Problem with LiveCD, can't boot

Asked by Khanh245

Hi, I'm new to Ubuntu and I heard that it was best so I try it. After getting the CD from Canonical, I put it in the CD-Rom, then I choose "Start or install Ubuntu". But after the boot screen loaded successfully, there was a bunch of errors all the way down that all numbers and it kept running running and running. I've tried running in safe mode but it couldn't load. I checked my CD for errors but it said everything was OK. Anyone can help me solve this problem? You know, I'm new to Ubuntu so I might do something wrong. Thanks a lot.

System Specs are below:

Desktop
Windows XP Home Edition SP2
Intel Celeron 2.0 Ghz
512 MB RAM
Geforce FX 5500

I've also tried adding acpi=off to the boot parameters but nothing happened.

Please specify the error messages you got. Which lines had "Fail" on the boot? Without some details it will be very hard to help you.

Here are 2 last errors I can see:
 [ 198.614222] EIP: [<c02ec4f4] _ _sched_text_start + 0x1b4/0xa90 SS: ESP 0068: d32eff80
 [ 198.614404] <1> Fixing recursive fault but reboot is needed!

The numbers are a kind of timestamps. On boot try to select "safe graphics mode". Press Alt+ctrl+F1 or Alt+Ctrl+F8 to see the messages (try both). Now you must be able to see the messages.

Can you post here the messages that have [ Fail ] on the end of the line?

I've tried and as I told you, it too fast, I can't read the error message.(using Geforce FX 5500)
But If I switch to my onboard VGA, I get these lines after the boot screen:
 * Setting preliminary keymap [OK]
 * Preparing restricted drivers [OK]
 * etc...
 * etc...
 * Loading hardware drivers
 [ 199.715652] intel_rng: FWH not detected [OK]
 * etc...
 Everything was OK, and I can pass through this screen easily. But the screen was blinking, and soon the monitor automatically powered off. I don't understand my PC. HELP!

Apparently your monitor don't support the resolution that Xorg is trying to use. Before booting the DesktopCD, on the first menu, try pressing the [ F4 ] key and select a resolution like [ 1024 x 768 x 32 ]or [ 1024 x 768 x 16 ].

Try this on both [ Start or install Ubuntu ] and [ Start Ubuntu in safe graphics mode ].

Try lowering the resolution if it doesn't work with [ 1024 x 768 x 16 ]. Maybe that way you can enable your Geforce graphic card, but try without it first.

If you still cannot use the GeForce graphical card, try installing with the onboard enabled, and after Ubuntu is installed, reboot and enable the Geforce.

Post here if that worked. If it did, you might get in the same problem after installation, but there is a workaround for it.

Please reply if this worked.

Another way of install Ubuntu is the Alternate CD. It's just for installation (no Xorg/Gnome and applications) and works only in text mode. It's an alternative if all fails with the Desktop CD.

Hope that helps.

Can you specify what were the results of:

1. Using lower resolutions (the [ F4 ] key).

2. Using lower resolutions with [ Start Ubuntu in safe graphics mode ].

3. Did you use the onboard graphic card?

4. Have you tried the Alternate CD?

5. You have to specify what motherboard and monitor you have (is it LCD? CRT? what is brand?).

2. The progress bar didn't continue running, it stopped and I had to restart my computer.
3. Yes

5. I'm using Asrock motherboard socket 478

Other options:

1. When the monitor turns off, can you switch to a tty console (it should work)? You can do this by pressing Alt+Ctrl+F1. If you can, get a look in the dmesg file on the /var/log directory. Just type:

less /var/log/dmesg

and look for what seems to be causing the problem. Post here the suspicious messages that you might find if you're not sure.

2. This must be something with the hardware. I don't know what you have plugged in USB (printers, webcams, etc). You should unplug them all before booting. All of them, just to make sure.

3. Try to use the lower resolutions.

4. Try to use the additional boot options (press F6 with the "safe graphic mode" selected and delete the "quiet splash --" options in the end of the line to see more details of what is causing the problem):

pnpbios=off pci=noacpi noapic irqpoll

There was no way I could boot from the LIveCD, so I got the Alternate CD and was able to install it on a partition of its own, however it will not boot (dualbooting with Win XP Pro; Win still boots fine).
I searched around this forums and tried a *lot* of parameters, here are my errors:

normal boot: native_apic_write_atomic+0x6/0x10
recovery mode: native_apic_write_atomic+0x6/0x10

noapic nolapic: error_code+0x7c/0x90
noapic acpi=noirq: says something about sysfs bridge and then starts displaying a lot of messages (too fast to read)
noapic acpi=off: lots of messages
noapictimer: IOAPIC invalid reference to IRQ 0 and then failed to set xfermode (err_mask=0x40)
noapictimer irqpoll: IOAPIC invalid reference to IRQ 0 and then unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address 030c2444
