Windows auto-restarts after trying the Ubuntu live CD

Asked by Ahmed Hamed

After trying Ubuntu live CD and then restarting to Windows. The system runs for a while and then hangs and auto -restart (shows a blue screen when auto restart is turned off). After restarting a dialog appears and reports that Windows has recovered from a serious system error. This issue continues until i disconnect power completely from my system(remove the power cable for a while). After trying the live CD the problem occurs again. I tried both AMD 64 and Intel i386 builds of Ubuntu 7.04 but still the same issue. Checking CD integrity shows no errors, and the same CDs worked on my laptop. My PC configuration is Intel Core 2 E6600 processor, Corsair 2*1GB 800Mhz DDR 2 ram, Leadtek Geforce 7600GT 256MB, Gigabyte GA-965P-DQ6 Rev 3.3 motherboard,HEC Zephyr 650W Power Supply, Western Digital Raptor 74GB which has one Windows partition only.

That is certainly odd behavior. In truth, it's unlikely that the live CD is responsible since it doesn't do anything to the system. However, it might be exposing a problem with the system. Not sure what or how though. Did you make any changes to the system in order to use the live CD? Did you stop windows during its boot process (I've done that and windows later complains).

If you think this might be a bug it would be better to report is as such. However, I've never seen or heard of any problems with booting a live CD - until now that is.

I myself was very surprised as I am sure the live CDs do nothing to the system, however this is what happens. I did not stop windows at all during boot(actually how can I stop it?) I just insert the live Cd, tell it to run or install ubuntu, run ubuntu and then restart to windows and this problems occurs. Disconnecting power is the only solution. Reporting the error to Microsoft says that I might have a problem with a driver, however, using a boot cd should not make my system exprience a driver problem.I also tried testing the rams with memtest and it did not give me errors. I did not modify anything in my system to boot the live cd, also even if I did, I don't thing such a modification causes the problem every time and then disappears when power is cut. Anyway thanks for trying to help, and I would appreciate it if somebody can help me solve this problem.

Not really an answer, but I think the comment from MS might be closer to the point. It may not be a driver that is having problems but there may be something in windows that is corrupted. Exactly how a live CD is causing that to manifest I can't say. I would run some windows diagnostics and see if you can detect any problems. Your pc or drive maker may have tools available for scanning the drive for errors. That might be a good place to start. Windows also has a repair feature but it's been so long I can't remember how to use it. I think you have to boot the windows CD to do it.

Sorry I can't be more help but I suspect you either have a windows or a hardware problem rather than an Ubuntu problem. Although, you might try the live CD on a different computer and see what happens.

Hello Jim, thanks for the reply.
I have tried the live cd with two other pcs(laptops actually) and they worked perfectly with out any issue. I assembled the PC myself so i don't have any maker to contact. About repairing windows, I believe that what it does is to repair any corrupted Windows files. I don't see why corrupted windows files could make it hang after running a live CD. I mean, what does the live cd leave on my pc? It think it shouldn't leave any trace. How does windows know that I booted ubuntu on my pc? And why does disconnecting power solve the problem?

Any help is appreciated. I really want to move to ubuntu but this problem is the only thing stopping me.

You are right. I don't think the live CD does anything and I don't think windows "knows". That is why I think that the problem is hardware related. Or maybe it's not a problem at all. Just a quirk in your system since disconnecting power solves the problem. Maybe the PC gets hung up for some reason. Maybe a cable is loose. Since you built it yourself, I'd crack the case and check everything.

In any case, I doubt this is going to stop you from using Ubuntu - unless there is an actual hardware problem. I'd back up the important stuff and go ahead and try installing. Most everything can be undone (unless you overwrite windows of course).

I have tried other linux distributions including Suse, Freespire, kubuntu and even ubuntu 6.06. Freespire refused to even boot and the same goes for ubuntu 6.06. Suse and kubuntu ran but the same problem occured in Windows after restarting. I suspect it's due to something with the bios. Does enabling Intel QST cause any problems in Linux?

Just for more information, I am currently running on the F9 version of the Gigabyte BIOS.

I don't know about the Intel QST but you can try disabling it and see if that helps. Are you able to actually boot the live CD all the way to the Ubuntu desktop? If so, I doubt there are any problems with the BIOS with respect to Ubuntu. If you can't boot the CD then there may be BIOS issues. I know I've had to pass special options at boot on some hardware. In any case, the problem you are experiencing is probably hardware related. I don't mean to be rude but you might have better luck on a forum for your mobo manufacturer. I found several discussions about your board but nothing that sounded very promising. I had problems several years ago with the nvidia 430 chip set and it was the nvidia forum where I found the most help.

Sorry I can't be more help.

Finally I was able to solve this problem and I am writing this from Ubuntu! The restart was actually caused by error and a BSOD appeared. I disabled auto restart in My Computer and check the errors. One of them included the file yk51x86.sys. This file is actually the driver for the built in network card which is Marvell Yukon 88E8056 Gigabit Ethernet Controller. I read many reports about the buggy sky2 driver support for this card. Got a FW update from Gigabyte and ran its file (eep.bat) but after that the card wasnt even detected in ubuntu and the problem persisted. Finally I decided to disable the card completely and got a D-Link PCI Network card which worked perfectly. This problem disappeared and I was able to run Windows perfectly with out any BSOD. Just wanted to say that to help anyone who couldn't get it to work.

Best Regards...
