What does Ubuntu do?

I know nothing about computers, but is ubuntu a program that you just open from your desktop or does it install itself as the operating system so your computer is no longer a windows but an ubuntu?
if so can you change it back to a windows computer

Thanks for the question.

Ubuntu is an operating system and also a wide range of application software. It can basically replacing your windows software and allow you to use a wide range of open source software, like i.e OpenOffice that is similar to the Office package you know, or FireFox for browsing the Internet, and many, many other things.

You can install ubuntu parallel to your windows in a dual-boot setup. This allows you to decide every time you boot your computer which system to use.
