Ubuntu will not restart after powercut

Asked by Richard de Rivaz

On a Fujitsu machine and after a powercut Ubuntu X11 will not restart. This problem is repeatable. A way round this is to startup using the recovery mode startup option and then run Xorg -configure /etc/X11/xorg.conf

The log shows:-

FreeFontPath: FPE "/usr/share/fonts/X11/misc" refcount is 2, should be 1 fixing

Rebooting the machine then starts up Ubuntu correctly.

Is the file system getting corrupted by the powercut?

Yes.
Also the bios can get affected, an UPS is really necessary in countries where powercuts are frequent (like mine.....).
You shoud boot with the LiveCD and force a check of your file system with e2fsck.

I agree that a UPS is desireable but surely the normal startup procedure for Ubuntu and X11 should be resilient enough to take care of such problems if a manual startup of X11 and reboot can get around the problem

The status of the system after such occurences its unknown and any attempt to automatically resolve may make it totally unusable. It is the best policy in these occurences to leave it to the manual intervention of the user.
If you believe that improvements are needed you are of course free to propose them by addressing them in a launchpad bug report:
