Suggest Improvement to Update system

Asked by Mike Smith

Ubuntu is great. One of its best features is that it does not come with every app under the sun. I can add only what I want. The Update system is good but I do not want to take everything offered (ie I don't do KDE). I can select only the updates I need - great. However, those I don't select stay on the list every time I check it and I have to keep selecting them out time and time again. Boring chore! Can you add a button "Don't include this item in my future update lists" please? I am sure all your users would appreciate this facility.

Keep up the good work,

Mike Smith

Hello Mike,

I guess you are not one of the two Mike Smith I know (how many of you there are out there, hundreds?).
You shouldn't have to select out items you have already selected out, but its true that they will stay on the list. What is being offered are only updates to your ALREADY installed packages. If Update Manager is offering you an update to kde that you DO have kde already installed on your system.
Can you check that the packages for which you are offered updates are installed and if they are (and you obviously don't want) remove them?

Request for clarification.

When using Synaptic, under the Package menu, there is a "lock version" option.

If we choose to lock a given installed package, then choose install all updates, will the update override my previous "lock" selection, OR, will the lock cause synaptic to silently ignore the update for that package but continue with the other updates ?

Thank you,

Eric, 51
