PCI device not working (8139 based ethernet card)?

Asked by buggedben

Hello,

I'm running Feisty 2.6.20-15-server on a desktop. I have a NIC with a RealTek 8139 chip. I cannot get network connectivity, and I suspect it is power problems regarding my PCI bus. This machine works fine with connectivity in Windows. I have run previous Linux distros successfully, though without ACPI working.

I've attached the dmesg print when acpi is on below. Let me know if there's anything else you may need. I've been at this for a while now with no luck. :(
I've tried the following boot options individually with no luck either: 'pci=noacpi', 'acpi=off', 'pci=routeirq'.

Thanks,
Ben

I seem to have solved it. I moved the card to a diff pci slot, booted with pci=noacpi and acpi=force, and had to load the 8139too module with media=0x01. It's a little bit of black magic and trial and error so I'm not sure if all of that was necessary, but it seems to be working now. I still don't understand what the original problem was.

william: 8139cp and 8139too were both in the output of lsmod, even when it wasn't working.

I understand that this problem is marked as solved but I am having the same problems.
I am new to Ubuntu and I have tried to modify the startup commands by appending pci=noacpi and noacpi to the startup line. This makes my laptop run very slowly and the Realtek network still doesn't work.
Here is the output from sudo lsmod if this helps. 8139CP and 8139too are both listed. This is without the pci=noacpi parameters added.
I also don't understand what the media=0x01 is, where it is, or how to modify it.
Hope someone can help.
