UBUNTU 9.10 IN USB DRIVE

Asked by jahmbahwahnn

i have used the startup disk creator and installed ubuntu 9.10 in an 8 Gib usb drive. Every time i boot up using usb drive it works as a live usb drive. Is it possible to install on the usb drive just like installing ubuntu into a hard drive by disconnecting the hard drive and then booting the cd and installing on the usb drive. is there any minimum requirements of the hardware for doing such installation (if such installation is possible) ?
Thanks in advance

Yes it's possible.
No need to remove the hard drive.
simply plug your USB drive > put Ubuntu CD in CD drive and boot from CD.
While installing select the USB drive for installation instead of HDD (i.e. /dev/sdb instead of /dev/sda).
And install bootloader on USB drive (/dev/sdb)
Remember this will erase all data on USB drive.

However I don't understand the need to do so, since Live USB drive with persistant storage is equivalent to this type of installation. Of course you will get benefit in terms of memory in above process.

Thanks Digvijay,
however, is there a min requirement of system hardware for such installation?

The minimum requirement for normal desktop installation are applicable here.
you can see it here :
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements

Keeping this in mind, see if you can afford to give that much of space for installation out of 8 GB.
If not you can try the lightweight alternatives such as xubuntu.
There are many other small linux distros out there which require even smaller space.
Just google for it and you will get it, if you need so.
Damn small linux, moblin ....... for example.
