Ubuntu 7.0.4 and Intel Graphics 82845 drivers

Asked by george_rutkay

I've installed Ubuntu on another partition (aside of my Win XP) on my Dell Optiplex GX260 and I'm extremely pleased with the results!

Ubuntu installed easily, it imported my Windows information effortlessly and it worked the first time! I use it at work and it even lets me log into the company's VPN network to the head office! Fantastic system, I'm telling my friends all about it!

But the full capability of my graphics chip set aren't being used. I can't go beyond 60Hz at 800X600 or at 1024X768 and the flicker is awful. But in Windows the full strength of the chip set is employed!

I looked on Intel's website and found a link to a TAR archive that's supposed to be the driver (they don't say what type of Linux, they just call it Linux).

Well, the driver I downloaded from Intel doesn't do anything, when I un-TAR it, it presents a bunch of directories and files - but none of them are recognized by Ubuntu Linux as being useful.

And so I'm left without an answer.

Does anybody know if there is a driver for Ubuntu Linux which will unlock the full graphics capacity of the GX260?

BTW, I'm not an expert at Linux at all so if I have to do anything on the command line, please explain it to me clearly since command line work it confusing.

Thanks

resolution problems in intel video cards can usually be solved using the folowing package:

915resolution

for me, just installing this package was enought to solve such problems.

I think I've tried that......is it from the Intel website?

Because I went there, I downloaded "i915Graphics.tar" I extracted it and ended up with a folder called "dripkg".

There are several directories and a few files visible in "dripkg". One file is "install.sh" which Linux identifies as an executable.

But when I double click on "install.sh" and try to run it in either Shell mode or just "Run", it doesn't do anything and I still don't have full access to my computer's graphics. I've tried several times.

This is what I meant when I first wrote my message above.

So what do I do with this package?

Or is the 915resulotion another file? What is that? Please clarify?

Thank you,
geo

So what do I do? This "install.sh" file finally did run in Terminal mode and I just kept hitting Enter like it asked me to. Now it made more files.

So what am I supposed to do with this?? I don't understand, please help!

Please help, what am I supposed to do now? I don't know what files are what, there isn't any "readme" file to help guide what has to be done..

Please help in plain english because I'm new to Ubuntu Linux.

Hello,
You can find it with synaptic tool (System>Administration>Synaptic). Search "915resolution" or "915" and download it. Synaptic is a fantastic tool to download packages.

Ok, I was successful in finding the 915resolution and making it install. And I restarted. Now what? I still cannot adjust my screen refresh rate, it's stuck at 60Hz.

(Oh, the monitor will refresh up to 75 Hz, I dual-boot between Linux and Windows XP and the Intel driver on XP lets it run up to 75 Hz).

You simply have to set the right refresh rates and resolution in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Here is a link that should help you:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FixVideoResolutionHowto

You will also find there specific tips on the intel chipset.

Yup, after the automatic update issue resolved itself and I was able to update the system, the 915resolution file could be installed.

After installing that, I was able to follow the instructions:

sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.custom
sudo sh -c 'md5sum /etc/X11/xorg.conf > /var/lib/x11/xorg.conf.md5sum'
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Of course one point that's missing - after the first step, it asks you for a password, I didn't know it would do that!

But that program in the terminal window ran, I answered it's questions and now my screen is running at 75Hz!! YAHOO!!! :) :) :) THANKS!
