Unable to install Ubuntu on my personal computer

Asked by sandeepu

I have a 256MB RAM with 80GB Hard Drive. I am totally new to Linux. I have allocated 65GB to windows and 15GB for linux.
When I am installing ubuntu with 6GB for "/" partition 1 GB for "/swap" partition and remaining for "/home" partition

Problem number 1:
It is saying that the last 7 to 8 GB is "unused" for any type of file system(i.e. ext2,ext3,xfs,reiserfs) and any type of partition("/or /home or /swap"). But I have used windows xp professional on that drive and I am still able to use it now with windows.

Problem number 2:
After sacrificing the last 7 to 8 GB mentioned in the 1st problem, I have chosen not to install "/home" partition i.e. i have given 6GB for"/" partition and 1GB "/swap" partition. The installation process went upto 90% waited for about 15 minutes without any progress and then automatically restarted. After sometime a blue screen appeared stating that "The display server has been started 6 times. Obviously something bad is going on. Wait for 2 minutes." Nothing happened for the next quarter hour.

Finally, I formatted the last partition of 15GB as NTFS file system for usage in windows.

Problem 1: Did you create the new partitions inside an extended (logical) partition? Maybe the problem is that you created more then 4 primary partitions in the same disc.

Problem 2: If you are using the Desktop CD, try to boot it "in safe graphics mode". It will try to use the vesa driver, which is compatible with almost all graphic cards.

I think you might have solved my 2nd problem. I will try doing what you have said. I did not create the new partitions on the extended (logical) partition. When I was installing linux ubuntu, there was only 1 other operating system i.e. windows xp professional. So, there was only 1 other primary partition not 4.

What I ment was:

windows+root+home+swap=4 primary

4 is the maximum. If you create a logical partition and create the linux partition inside, there will no more problems.

windows+(root+home+swap).

Inside a logical partition, you can create all the partitions you want. This way, there will be 2 partitions: 1 for windows and 1 extended, with 3 logical partitions inside.

Hope that helps.
