Can't load xubuntu 7.04 from a bought CD. "can't access tty - job control turned off"

Asked by Phil

I am trying to installl an operating system on my daughter's computer which see bought from her company but doesn't have an OS. I have loaded up my Windows Xp on it but this is a short term solution as it wont be authenticated. I have bought Xubuntu disc from linuxsales and it arrive without any instructions. Eventually I thought I would try to boot the computer from the disc. Things seem to be going well until i got the dreaded "can't access tty etc"

The computer is an Opti Dell with a pentium 4 1.6Mhz processor. Not sure about the Ram but in excess of 256Mb. (My problem is she is not on line so I have to come home to communicate).

I have tried to read the thread on this topic but there are pages of helpful advice which I don't understand. Instructions like delete "quiet splash" or select the e key, using grub or changing the kernel, are lost on me.

May be the best idea is to buy Red Hat. Before I do that is there any easy options to solve my problem?

Phil,
I am getting the same message while using Wubi 7.04.01, which is supposed to instal Ubuntu on a computer that has another (Windiows) operating system. It does a complete download and a full installation.

After I finished, the instruction was to reboot and then the Ubuntu came up as a choice with my XP System.

I rebooted and then the opening failed with the same note as you got (can't access tty - job control turned off)!

I will try uninstal and reinstal first (different download disc program) and see what happens.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to open this control or what else can be done?

Thanks.

Warren

hi Juny,

I can't help, sorry. This error message seems to have one than one cause. See Question 5673 as an example of the problem(s). I have been thinking since and I think I will delete Windows by reformatting the hard drive - that is if I can remember how to do it.

Phil,

if you can you should download and try the Alternate CD.
The problem with a LiveCD is that it is almost impossible to debug eventual problems.
The only thing we can try are some boot options to be passed to the kernel; these require your cooperation and willingness.

If you are looking for suitable distros, bear in mind that if you have a 256 MB machine you need to use a light distribution; red hat might not be the best choice in this respect.
Damn Small Linux (DSL) v3.4 is just out and seems to be a nice distibution:

Phil,

I rebooted a second time after getting the error and it went through the rest of the installation without error! The Ubuntu is working OK now.

I thought that that (rebooting) was a Windows cure but it seems to have worked with Ubuntu that was packaged with the Wubi download. Wubi installs Ubuntu on a windows machine by making virtual partitions and then installing Ubuntu in those partitions. It then allows a choice of operating systems during the boot-up procedure.

Try a reboot - it worked for me.

Hi Cesare and Juny,

Things are looking up. I went to reformat the C drive but couldn't remember how to do it so for the want of nothing else to do are started Xubuntu disc in safe graphic mode and it booted up. (I have done this before without success). I could then go on to install the system. Problem seems solved!
