Network password on one site; none needed on the other

Asked by Chuck

I'm new so remember to include info you expect me to already know. I don't! The problem is I can connect and share with one of my wxp computers but on another I get the password box and I can't get past it. I'm not worried about massive security. I just want to access the external hard drive on the computer that keeps nagging for a password. There are some music files I want to move to the Ubuntu laptop and the move them back. Does this problem have anything to do with how I allowed sharing on the wxp computers or do I need to fix or install on Ubuntu??

I have fumbled around trying to follow the directions for similar sounding problems without success. I am pretty sure this little problem is easy to fix if I knew what I was doing, but I don't. Thank you in advance.

Hello Chuck!

Im not sure if this is your problem, but seems to be...

When you access a win share via gnome/kde, it assumes that you'll do it with your running user.

If on the other side, you have the same user on the client box, it will accept the password.

If not, it will give an error message, because it is a diferent user, and it will ask again for password of a non existing user.

Try acessing via the nautilus location smb utility. To do it, go for Local > Desktop, press ctrl+L
and then insert into the hilighted field:

smb://user_on_the_shared_box@IP_OR_NAME_OF_SHARED_BOX/shared_dir

or only smb://user@sharedbox

So you will force the system to go to the share with a given username.

You can also use another protocols with this trick (like: ssh://user@ip_linux_box or ftp://<email address hidden>) and so on. And you can also copy this as a bookmark location :)

Ill be happy if this helped you :)
See ya!

I think I have fixed the problem and thank you for your help. I believe the problem was with the sharing setup on the windows xp folders. Somehow I had created a share for " administrative purposes". I googled a fix to delete them and re-did the windows share and I am able to share with the 3 external hard drives. The problem is fixed. Again, thanks for your effort and time.
