monitor goes into sleep mode after installing ubuntu 9.10

I tried to install ubuntu 9.10 in a dual boot config with xp through the update manager and also the live disk and it will install ,however when i try to boot into ubuntu 9.10 and my monitor will go into sleep mode and does not boot up. I have an acer h233h 23 " monitor and my graphics card is gt 9800 (650) I also had the same problem with other distro's of linux . when I upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04 I had the same problem , however When I did the upgrade through the update manager to 9.04 it worked. I cannot install it with the disk. if anyone knows the solution to my problem please help me out.

Are using a LCD monitor with maximum supported resolution less than 1024*768 ?? I had similar problem using mandrake linux my system did booted but my monitor shows "no signal going to sleep mode".

boot to recovery root console and run:

sudo apt-get --purge remove xserver-xorg-video-nv nvidia*; sudo apt-get --purge autoremove; sudo apt-get clean

This will force your system to use the vesa failsafe driver. You can then use:

gksudo jockey-gtk

and install the proprietary driver.
