wifi card not recognized

I'm trying to use an SMC pcmcia wi-fi card on my ubuntu 6.10 laptop and it doesnt work. I also am trying to use a hawking wifi USB on my ubuntu 7.04 desktop and same deal. I'm accessing the internet through a borrowed laptop. be warned: I am a total noob and don't really know anything about the terminal etc.
