I enabled Desktop Effects and now my screen is white

. Can't see a thing. I can see the cursor changing when it hovers over desktop items. I am not familiar with Linux. I want to learn. please help

I have installed Ubuntu 7.04, on dual boot

is there such a function similar to windows "safe start" that disregards display settings?

Yes, you can use the Recovery Mode; its one of the options on the boot menu.
Also, can you tell us what video card you are using and which drivers you used (from the restricted drivers manager or self-compiled)?

I installed ubuntu to try to learn linux. I have no clue about the environment. I was playing around with the settings and enabled something like "advance desktop display". cant remember the exact function name.

I tried the recovery mode but it takes me to a linux "command prompt" I have no knowledge of linux commands :( I WANT TO LEARN

i am not aware of using specific drivers. I just clicked in one of the desktop option to familiarise myself with the environment

also ubuntu hadnt connected to the internet to look for all the drivers it might need

ok. What you need to do is boot regularly, and press ctrl+alt+F1, login using your usename and password, and issue this command:

sudo killall compiz

then press ctrl+alt+F7. now login and go to System>preferences>Desktop effects, and disable them. Then restart your computer, and all should be well.If it isint, post here again so someone with more expertise in this can help you.

If the above doesn't work, follow again the same procedure but replace the given command with this one:

metacity --replace

And let us know how it goes.

cheers guys. actually i had a friend pass by that is a linux architect and did all the above for me. he also gave me a book on unix i have to read to do it by myself. hmmm time to go back to school. thanks again
