no display of battery with laptop

Sorry if it is a little silly what I'll ask. You referred to 'Energymanagment' and 'pictogram' . Although I can imagine what you mean, can you please assure that you went to System->Preferences->Power Manager, selected the 'General' tab and checked the 'Always display an icon' option.

Can you please check if the bug #439448 affects you. Do you have any doubled icons?
Try to remove the notification area from your panel and then add it again. To do this you'll have to right click on the panel, click 'add to panel', type 'notification area' (to filter the other irrelevant items) and finally click add.
If this changed your notification area content, probably it is because of the above bug.

Thanks for your advice. It works.
The notification area also shows an icon with the harddisk telling that
some harddisks have problems. More details: many bad sectors.
I checked harddisk via Windows programm and no problem occured. Laptop
is Compaq Presario and around one year old. It works okay.
Is it possible that this report has to do with a bug?

I think that this is an other problem. So, please make an other question so that you get some more answers and also help others, who have the same problem, find more easily the relevant conversation.
You can send me a link to the new question and I'll try to help. In the new question, it would be helpful if you provided the output of the command

fdisk -l

and also check if there are some partitions that you can't mount when the icon shows up.
