Installing raid 1 with 7.10 alternate cd

Asked by steve hough

I have successfully used ubuntu 6.1 alternate cd raid 1 on my computer for 1 year. I was trying to upgrade to 7.04 with new alternate cd. I started with a fresh system (2 new sata 500gb hds). 3 raid partitions.

The install went perfectly without a hitch. I used the manual for raid1 http://users.piuha.net/martti/comp/ubuntu/raid.html
However, when I was testing for a hd failure (disconnecting 1 hd and then powering up), the system would only show 1 sata hd (as expected), go to the Ubuntu load screen logo, and then stall.
The error reads [ 225.441625] read error on swap device (9:1:8). Then it goes to a initramfs prompt. I was expecting both hds to be carbon copies of each other, so if 1 died, the other hd would take completely over. I set it up with 3 raid partitions, 10gb / bootable ext3, 1gb swap, 400gb /home ext3

Any suggestions? Does raid1 work with 7.04 ? using alternate cd?

Ok, solved it myself. The command mdrun and reboot will successfully load ubuntu with EITHER hd disconnected. I dont understand initramfs, but without the mdrun command and reboot, you are stuck.
You then just have to reload (remount) the partitions as outlined in http://users.piuha.net/martti/comp/ubuntu/raid.html

So, Software raid using the 7.04 Ubuntu alternate cd really works!!!!

Thanks for the whiteboard.

Case over.
