Laptops with 2 graphic cards supported?

Asked by Jan-Philipp Litza

Hi,

I want to ask if Ubuntu (or Linux in gerenal) supports laptops with two graphic cards (one less powerful [Intel] for energy saving and one more powerful [ATI] for performance). Is it possible to switch between the cards like with windows or is it only possible to use one card all the time?

Specifically, I think about buying an Acer Aspire Timeline 3810TG or 4810TG, which both have one Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X4500HD and one ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330 card. With Windows, it would be possible to switch between them on-the-fly. Is it possible to switch between them with Ubuntu at least with restarting X or something like that? Otherwise, buying the version with 2 graphic cards wouldn't make any sense for me and I could save a lot of money.

Thanks in advance for any answers...

Hi there, yes I believe Linux supports switchable graphics, but it would depend on the drivers. I'm not sure if it would be as easy as choosing your graphics card from a list. I think switchable graphics is automatic - ie, the computer will use the ATI GPU when in high demand, and during times of low demand will automatically switch to the Intel chipset seamlessly in a split second.

I am not fully understanding what you are trying to ask Sir. You can
only have one graphics card per system. You can't switch between
graphics card and before buying ATI cards please have a look at this [1]

It is actually better to have the Intel card IMHO :)
