mouse pointer icon

Asked by Eric R Drayer

operating system ubuntu 9.04 amd64
video card radeon 9000 pci
mother board intel dp43tf

bug:
The mouse icon is a white rectangle 1 inch long .5 inch tall.
There are small speckles above below and in the rectangle.
I have attempted to change the mouse pointer icon using the gnome tool in appearances to no effect.
The mouse works but it is difficult to use as the pointer does not make it clear where the activation spot is.

I just installed this mother board to replace an abit intel ip35v.
the old board did not have this problem.
I have debian 5 on this hard drive and it has the same problem ...the kernel is older.

Try looking in appearence settings and selecting a different mouse pointer. If it doesn't change straight away then restart X with ALT + K + PrintScreen

Thanks for your input.
I do not think the print screen function starts X.
the print screen function created a png but there is no image in it.
There is also a problem in blender. The interface has a what looks like generic empty geometric icons instead of the actual button, info, etc.

blender has no text in the interface though the rest of the interface looks close to normal.
I have tried to paste from the clip board into gimp in order to get the screen shot but I was unsuccessful.
The image was save by the icon image of the saved screen shot png.
the mouse stoped working in gimp though I was able to exit...no painting,selecting...
I opened mypaint and it seemed to work.

on its own, no. If you press it with K and ALT press (Like I said) it will restart the X server. If the mouse pointer theme doesn't apply immediately, use that shortcut

I did what you said and the x server did not restart.

Have you tried removing any existing /etc/X11/xorg.conf file?

In a terminal window (or at the console)

$ sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.deleted

then reboot.

i have reinstalled radeon and xorg packages as well.
I will take the advice of the xorg.conf file and run dpkg.
If there is still a problem then I will reinstall 9.04 over the debian 5 on this hard drive and see what happens.
hda1==ubuntu9.04 hda4==logical debian5.
I would like to point out that I have not modified any ubuntu configurations.
Perhaps I was wrong when I thought that installing a new mother board would not require a complete reinstall of the operating system.
I am not going to delete the xorg.conf file as recommended above by Andy.
I do not think it will help.

I do not know if this message which appears as I boot in recovery mode is relevent......

Dec 5 09:51:14 eric-desktop kernel: [ 17.284138] pci 0000:04:00.0: Boot video device

No change after reconfigure.
I put in my 9.04amd64 install disk and ran ubuntu from the DVD and had the same problem.

though now the speckles have filled in a bit and the "pointer" is a square 1 inch to a side.
Blenders interface has no text.
gimp is having problems as well.

I think that I need to get a new card but trying to find out which one to test with has been grim.
I will probably buy a radeon x1550 as it is cheep and close. I believe that I need to use the fglrx drivers but I am still confused after all I have read today the best advice seems to be that one of three options should be tried...-ati, radeonhd or fglrx

I was hopeing that maby an intel with on board video board would be easy but what I have seen on the forums has been just as iffy as the other two.(nvidia,ati).

one day wasted trying to fix my mouse pointer icon.

Sounds to me like the 'show mouse' plugin in compiz is enabled.
Or did you enable 'Accessibility tools' somewhere?

btw. to start Xserver you may just logout/in

I did not install compiz.
I am not using compiz.
Compiz does not appear in system processes.
Perhaps I have made a mistake. Would you tell me how to be sure if the above is not enough?
I have not enabled Accessibility tools. As far as I know this is a fresh install with all updates, the latest blender, yafaray,
no desktop effects, or anything else that might cause the radeon 9000 to choke.

still do not see the use of restarting the server as I have rebooted often today.
Yet I will do this if something happens I will come back shortly if not I will be on-line tomorrow.
Thanks for taking the time to read and think about this a bit.
I am frustrated at the moment but I really do appreciate every one who is looking at this.

I did another screen shot with the print-screen-sysRQ button on the keyboard and opened the file in gimp...
The mouse pointer shows up correctly in the gimp image interface! BUT the mouse pointer as shown actually on the screen is still a 1 inch square of dots that form a pattern which changes after each reboot.

ohh I think the x1550 is out now.
ATI offers no Linux 64bit driver and I do not know if ubuntu has an open source one that will work.
I read that nvidia workstation cards have a good track record.??

These are a great set of links.
I have used some of them in the past and some recently.
I was particularly interested in the bios bug link.
It is unclear whether this bug has an effect on the mouse pointer or the blender interface problem.
I also should point out that I used the abit board and the same radeon 9000 card for a year with no problems.
I will pursue these points of departure.
Thanks again for your time.
I would have searched for the bios bug but I did not know whether it was related.
Sometimes there seems to be an awful lot of rabbit holes sometimes.
I can't help feeling that maby the mother board is the problem.
In terms of time use I am leaning toward mailing this board back to tiger direct.
If I do I will be unable to respond here for a few days...
