Beginner Q: Tried to set up dual boot system

Asked by candrews4 on 2007-07-05

System hardware: Motherboard ASUS A8MSN-LA AMD Athlon 64x2, 2Gb or RAM, two drives: Master ATA - running Windows XP Pro, Slave ATA - Formatted NTFS and allocated for Ubuntu 7.04 CD install. I let the Ubuntu installer partition the drive during install.

Problem: I have run Ubuntu from the CD to familiarize myself with the GUI. Booted from the CD and ran install program to install Ubuntu on the slave HD. Tried guided and manual drive partition installs. The install tries all seemed to work, but when I went to boot from the Ubuntu HD (slave), the Ubuntu start screen appears but progress bar does not advance. 3-4 minutes later, it goes to the Debian console and gives me a message about "tty cannot load". ??

I can boot back into Windows XP Pro with no issues and boot from the live CD still.
No error codes. The box is running Phoenix Award Bios 3.07 08/02/2006. Grub lists both Ubuntu generic kernel and Windows XP as boot options.

My goal is to get Ubuntu 7.04 loaded on the slave hd and run a dual boot system.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks for your comments. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would appear that the CD image (ISO file) you downloaded could be corrupt. There is an easy way to verify the integrity of the Ubuntu ISO files you download. For more information, please visit

You stated that you can boot from the liveCD still, then would be easier to check the burned cd for errors.

Is there any more to the error that you are receiving? Please be as exact as possible with the error.

Best Regards,

The reason I recommended doing a MD5SUM check is it only takes a minute or so to compare the hashes, also this is the recommended answer to give if you suspect the CD image is corrupt.

Can you help with this problem?
