Synaptic Package Manager upon download keeps asking to insert Ubuntu disk.

Asked by Matthew Seech

I am trying to install items in Synaptic Package Manager and keep hitting a road block. The program opens the window "Dowloading Package Files" and it immediately brings up another window "Information" which reads:

"Please insert the disk labeled:
Ubuntu 6.06 _Dapper Drake_ - Release i386 (20060531.2)
in drive /cdrom/"

I have the Ubuntu install disk in my CD drive, and when I press ok the same window reopens. I cannot get around this!!!

Please help!!

If you want to stop using the cd to install packages, and instead install from the internet, you can edit your sources.list file, and remove the references to the disk.
In Applications>Accessories>Terminal enter the following line
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
enter your pw when asked
Comment out all of the deb cdrom lines by putting the # symbol in front of the lines.
Save the file

Now it shouldn't ask you for the disk anymore and will get the files from the online repositories instead.

go System>Software Sources. You will be asked for your user password(because you can alter admin procedures that can effect other user's of youre system),then a tabbed graphical interface will appear .Go through the tabs , one will show CD's to check for software .uncheck the box and close and it will not ask again. While you are there ,you can check boxes for additional software repositories to be used when updating or looking for software online, including Non-free packages. When you close it will tell you packages are not up to date .Push reload (need online connection)let it completly finish doing its thing and close.Synaptic should now work ok.Hope this helps.
