If this is after you installed some graphic driver like for nvideo just wait untill it is over. Try to reboot your machine and wait untill Gnome comes up.

Hi Joachim, thank you for your reply. My situation is that I have only started using Ubuntu in college and installed it through Sun Virtualbox on my Samsung NC10 Netbook using external monitor. I updated any files that were due and it restarted and worked fine. The problem was after I upgraded to the latest version that it advised, 9.10 Karmic Koala. Im not sure if I can access the command line since Im using virtualbox. It's all a learning process. I'm not sure about the nvideo drivers, I just let the update work its job but on reboot, thats when I incurred problem.

You will most likely need to install the guest additions to get video drivers installed. You should boot using safe VGA bootoption so that you get a desktop
You will download an ISO, you will shutdown the system and mount the ISO and repower on the virtual system, you can then install the additions by running the script for the right system on the CD. This will make things clearer:

Can you help with this problem?
