I guess you are using the LiveCD? Can you boot to the desktop?

no the cd was sent by canonical on request
also i unable to boot upto desktop

after i see that all drivers and kernel are loaded
the very first screen i encounter is the one that ask for user id and password
which i am unable to crack

Amit,

what you are experiencing is not normal at all. The LiveCD should not ask for userid and password.
I think it is better if you require another CD from Shipit, possibly the Alternate CD.
In the meantime, check during boot the messages on your screen (you must use ALT-F1), and please report back here any warning or error message.
Try also to boot in Safe Graphics Mode (its one of the boot options) and see if that works.

the alt-f1 command displays a list of modules which are loading
it shows every thing is o.k.

also the boot in safe graphics mode makes every thing garbled
and i reach no where

i would now request for a new cd as my net connection is not reliable
enough and slow too (looking to take 16 hours ) through wubi

but thanks anyway for your support and time

Amit, any success with the new CD?
I had exactly the same problem after downloading Ubuntu from the official site so I'm not sure
the problem is related to a bad CD.

amit, an option for downloading would be using bittorrent, were it will automatically resume if/when you get cut off. That way if you don't have a steady internet connection, you can still get it rather easily.

Wow, I almost forgot that I wrote something here.

Well, the problem was the hardware, exactly the RAM. After I changed the RAMs position on the motherboard, there was no problem anymore.

Ikdonoho
try to reinstall ubuntu from scratsh and use an easy passw.

first format / but not /home, and after reinstall you will have almost everything in its place again.

bye, I hope I could help you

I can confirm this. On some computers, when I boot from the CD on some computers I get the GDM login screen which says "User ubuntu will automatically login in 10 seconds" and it counts down. This does not happen all the time and is not a major issue.

I believe the username is ubuntu and the password is blank.

We ran 100 machines through the LiveCD through PXE and had one that was exhibiting signs of this exact issue. All 100 machines were the exact same model. The date on the one machine that could not login was set to 12/27/2067. After the date was brought back to 2011, we were able to log in as normal.

I hope this helps others with this same issue.

for my Lenovo Thinkpad x61 I was able to shift to the shell with the CTRL-ALT-F1 key combo
used sudo passwd ubuntu to create a new passwd.
