What programs do you need in order to create a Linux-Based Operating System?

Asked by Theatre-X

Me and a few friends plan on starting one. Just need to know.

Here's what we have so far:

Linux Kernel 2.6.31
Gedit as our Text Editor
Grub as our boot loader
Firefox as our browser
Bash as our shell (Temporarily)
Apt-Get as our package manager

What else do we need? Thanks! ^^

Almost forgot:

GCC and G++ as our compiler(s) ^^

You need a kernel and something to boot the kernel. The kernel IS linux, the other stuff round it is the release. If you have a bootable kernel, you have Linux.

I suggest you investigate ulite. You also forgot the desktop environment (GNOME can be assumed from Gedit) and a Window Manager (Metacity/Compiz) and an X server (Xorg)

And yes I know Linux IS the kernel. And everything else is GNU ^.^

Cool thats pretty much the minimum, ulite will give you a boot loader and kernel with kernel drivers, you can then add what you need from the standard repos and build a super light distro. I recommend LXDE for insane lightness.
