redirect keyboard volume keys
I have a Soundblaster Audigy 7.1 and a Logitech keyboard. The volume shortcuts on the keyboard work (as in gnome recognises these buttons and I can see the onscreen volume display) but the volume doesn't actually change.

In a terminal can you run the command
alsamixer
Then see which of the mixers changes while you're incresing/
Since we have different mixers is quite possible that the keybindings are operating against a mixer which is not the "master", porbably what you are looking for is to increase the volume to your pcm mixer only or any other mixer perhaps.

Using alsamixer I can see the keyboard buttons change the Analog C where as it should be Analog F.
Also when I increase the volume the gnome volume (Analog C) control goes down and visa versa...is this a bug?
Well, it could be a bug.
Which is your keyboard model?
| shclim (shclim) said : | #4 |
I'm not sure exactly what model it is but the buttons worked in kubuntu breezy with the Logitech Access Keyboard configuration, but in Gnome dapper they change the wrong volume.
The other problem with gnome volume has already been reported, Bug #36070.

Since I have upgraded to Dapper release I still have this problem.
My keyboard media keys link to the wrong volume controller in gnome.
This can be resolved by using xbindkeys and xbindkeys-config. This trouble is related to an oversight by the GNOME developers, and will hopefully be fixed soon.

Thank you for commenting on this, I will try this out soon.
Out of all the computers I have installed Ubuntu on, mine is the only one with a media button problem (pretty good going really).
Thanks again,
Scott

Hi,
I still have had no luck with this and have installed edgy and found the same problem.
The driver is the CA0106 (Alsa) and I have read that other people have many problems with this chip.
The thing is my card/driver works fine, and the sound is perfect!! I just want Gnome to change the correct volume when I press the buttons on my keyboard.
Should I submit thi as a bug????

To set the device and track you change by pressing your VolUp/VolDown keys you can use gconf-editor and change the values /desktop/

For those using Ubuntu (w/Gnome), you don't need to modify the alsamixer directly if you want your keys to control the volume no matter what driver you're using (OSS,ESD,ALSA,etc).
The default volume control for your MM Keybindings in Ubuntu is "Master Mono".
Although it isn't one of the default controls you'll see in your standard volume control/mixer (with ALSA selected at least), if you choose to display "Master Mono" from Edit->Preferences, you should see it changing if you leave the mixer window open while trying to use your MM keys to adjust the volume.
To change the channels which your MM keys control, go to your main Gnome menu and find:
Applications-
In there, find Desktop-
Edit the default_
You can just add or replace what's in there. Mine says [Master Mono, Master], so the volume keys on my keyboard control both of those channels.

Err..um, what Tux said above...
Yeah...didn't see that.
Can you help with this problem?
Provide an answer of your own, or ask shclim for more information if necessary.
