What is the general extent of testing done of Ubuntu releases-in-development-or-candidacy on Dell OEM Ubuntu?

Asked by christopherbalz

I am considering purchasing a Dell computer with Ubuntu on it pre-installed ( http://dell.com/ubuntu ). I have run Ubuntu with success most of the time for 3 years on an IBM ThinkPad r51 (manufactured in 2004). However it has required tons of work to maintain as updates routinely karate-chop video and audio, rendering them temporarily dead.

So I am wondering: Will using Dell OEM hardware with Ubuntu pre-installed be a better bet? I am not looking for any guarantees or assurances. I am just wondering if Ubuntu tests on Dell OEM hardware and fixes to suit before finalizing releases, and if so, what the ballpark (general) extent of that is.

Thank you!

The hardware in Ubuntu depends on the kernel, its not really related to Ubuntu
itself. As the kernel development goes on in the upstream, we will have more
and better supported hardware. For Dell, I recommend using the laptop you were
using before, because at least you know that everything worked as you wanted
on it. Ubuntu doesn't certify any hardware (at least not yet) so you should be
fine but I must say that the Dell OEM DVD does offer some extra features
available like NVIDIA drivers on the disk and such. So in the end the choice
is yours, choose what best fits your needs
