Recovery software that backs-up hard disk

I need software like Phoenix Recover Pro which does not need an operating system to restore the back-up file in the emergency situation. However, since I wish to use free software (so that I can edit and recompile the source code of it.), I wonder if there is any free recovery solution softwares. Is there any?

Ghost4Linux is cool. This open source tool needs no installed OS. G4L works with it own mini linux.
