f-prot installer

Asked by Alex Anyukhovski

I am trying to install any application which appears to work fine then just as its about to install I get the following message E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

I now find that I can no longer install anything and i am unsure how to correct the problem having only just converted from windows I am struggling to work out how things work and what the error messages mean.
Also I have tried "

sudo dpkg --configure -a && sudo apt-get -f install
 but it doesn't help. -couldn't seen server from which i want to download files

????

Hello,

server or files in synaptic. If you see no files try to rename the file available in /var/lib/dpkg in maybe available-broken and the rename the file available-old in available.

i found this:

http://www.f-prot.com/support/helpfiles/unix/workstation/inst_pro.html

there is a way without synaptic and they talk only about the tar file. So lets try it.
