can i use umbutu instead of Windowsxp?

how is Umbutu(sp) better than Windowsxp?My brother says its better in every sense of the word and that your virus protection cnat be beat...so if i want to use it instead of my Windows xp can i and how do i get started???

You need either to download and burn an iso image or order (free) a CD from shipit.
You can try the LiveCD first; you will run Ubuntu from the CD so that you can check if you like it or not before installing.

And by running Ubuntu from the CD, we mean actually 'booting' your computer from the CD. Most likely, you can simply do this by putting the Ubuntu CD in your CDROM player and then restarting your computer. If all goes well, you should see the Ubuntu main menu after a while. If you see a Windows XP startup screen instead, your computer might not be properly set up to boot from CD's. Perhaps you can ask your brother to fix this for you :-)

If he can't or won't, we can try to 'talk you through' from here, but it can be kind of tricky, especially if you've never changed setting in your computers' BIOS before. But hey, just follow my instructions above first, hopefully it will Just Work! ;-)

he said the same thing as far as using Umbutu from the cd first..i was wondering if all goes well and i like it better would i then be able to just use it instead of Windows xp..ill just put in the cd first then see how it goes thank you for all your help...Charm
