upgraded from 8.04 to 8.10.wont start on pass word or user name. kyeboard and mouse no response.

I think its alright .Had to go esc.onboot,then into recovery mode,went to root shell,update user mane and password,then back to recovery ,then fix damaged packages.Fingers croosed.
