one or more failing...........................................................d

Asked by John Kelly

Hi,
since upgrading to karmic koala my problems with it seem to point to harddrive problems after installation..Disk utility says back up all data and replace the disk......... Many bad sectors
Should I heed this warning or continue on ..is there some remedy for this that is straightforward, Would it be better to invest in a new laptop!? Is it easy to get a new disk to put in?
thanks
John

More than one year ago I bought a new HDD (IDE) for my laptop and replaced the old one. After a few months I dropped my laptop and I was sure that the HDD was affected somehow. I also used an application to diagnose the integrity of the HDD and it said that I have to replace (after I back up my data) the almost dead HDD (24H until it succumbs). It seems that this utility is now by default installed in Karmic.

Shortly, my advise is not to get panic. I disable the warning message and go on with my work. Maybe is just a particular case, mine, but it lasted for the past year, with no major failures. The second partition works slowly sometimes, but I did not lose any data so far.

Good luck.
