Lost grub file have 9.10 live cd how do I load grub or update to 9.10

Asked by Guyoclee

I have had Ubuntu on a duel boot with windows for a few years. I re-installed windows as it had some problems. this lost my grub file. I have looked but cant find how to install the grub file from ubuntu 9.10 disk, sudo grub does not load grub command line. any idea on how to get ubuntu to work. Would it work to if i just save contents of the old ubuntu partition to a external hard drive then install 9.10 to that partition? or is there a better way. please help lost of my main docs are on the ubuntu partition hidden from windows.
Thanks Guy

I have an old Win XP on hardisk 1 and have installed a new version on harddisk 2 together with ubuntu 9,10

My problem has been solved with the program StartUp-Manager, where it is possible to make a Grub Rescue floppy disk, which starts Grub menu without changing MBR. (In StartUp-Manager , Advanced , Create rescue floppy). StartUp-Manager is in Ubuntu Softwarecenter in ubuntu 9.10, and has homepage: http://web.telia.com/~u88005282/sum/index.html

I have read, that it would be possible to write in MBR with some Windows programs, and I have studied the possibilities with WinGrub, but I think my solution is easy and safe.

I forgot, that maybe you can't open ubuntu 9.10

At http://developer.berlios.de/project/showfiles.php?group_id=10921
is it possible to download a grub-rescue-floppy.img or a grub-rescue-cdrom.iso

I have made a floppy disk from the image and this opened ubuntu directly.

Another possibility is writing to your MBR with:
 bootlace.com for DOS, Win9x , Linux
or
grubinst.exe for NT-based Windows (XP, Vista)

I have not done it, but see explanation at:
