IBM NetVista Compatibility

Asked by Esaren

I am attempting to overwrite a corrupt Windows XP with Linux Ubuntu on an IBM NetVista, Model Type: 67941 21U. I am wondering if it is compatible with most, if not all standard hardware?

I followed this tutorial to burn the install CD: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/iso

I did skip the MD5 comparison, I'm not sure if it shouldn't of been though.

For some reason the IBM NetVista does not recognize the CD when first starting the computer, so I pressed F12 to choose the device to boot from I chose CD-ROM and it said something about not finding any resource to boot from or no operating system found, press F1 to repeat boot sequence. I then switched the BIOS to boot from the CD-ROM Drive first instead of the hard drive with the corrupt Windows XP and it gave me a similar, if not same message. Is there a way to get it to boot from the CD and install?

I did check to see if it showed up as an install CD on the desktop computer I used to burn the CD and am currently using to post this question. I didn't try to open the fie though, but once it was burned and ejected upon completion I did put it back in and it popped up a little window with a few options, I just glanced at it and considered it success and went to boot it on the IBM.

If anyone knows where I can receive more technical help as there is more details to be added but this doesn't seem to be the forum to ask on as I want to keep the topic relevant to installing Ubuntu.

Thanks in advanced, it is much appreciated!

I'd suggest you download the ISO from the offical site http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download.

Download the ISO and burn it to a CD like any other ISO , make sure your computer will boot from the CD first OR go with the boot menu by pressing F12 and selecting the CD.

You can choose to try Ubuntu without installing , do that to see if your hardware is working.
If you're happy with Ubuntu you can just choose install from the desktop.

Can you help with this problem?
