Hello!

1] Please open a shell and enter "uname -a" (tells me your current installation).

2] Tell me the exact model of your DSL-modem (written on the modem/ probably bottom side). Further tell m how it's connected.

3] Enter "sudo lspci" and then "sudo lsmod" in the same terminal. Give us all the command output in your next message.

4] Assumin that's all ok and these's nothing special in your "/var/log/messages" (look for errors there too!) I assume it's all ybout your modem.

5] Can't you switch your modem in router mode? What das the modems internal logger (webinterface?) tell you? What errorcode do you receive from the modem or ubuntu? Have you already googled for it? Are your credentials (username/password) corect?

hi and thanks for the reply
i write the answers of each question with the same nums:

1] Linux ubuntu 2.6.31-14-generic #48-ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 16 14:04:26 UTC 2009 i686
GNU/linux

2]modem name = ZTE ZXDSL 831
I did not undrestand what u mean by how its connected.

previously, I searched for this problem and found a website guided how to configure ADSLPPPoE in terminal.

i did follow it using command "sudo pppoeconf" and I followed the guide for configuration.

then to start the connection, following the guide, i typied in terminal "pon dsl-provider". got an error that "only members of the dip group can ......." then I rechecked my user's group and saw that user was in dip group.
surprisingly, without any changes, now im getting other outputs when I command pon dsl-provider:

Plugin rp-pppoe.so loaded.
RP-PPPoE plugin version 3.8p compiled against pppd 2.4.5.

........
and I still dont have any connection....

What does /var/log/messages or other logfiles say? Can you run pppoeconf with -v or -vvv for very verbose output? Has your modem an internal loging facility?

The answer is there somewhere. Unfortunately I don't know the manufacturer and modem type. Further I never used "SUDO pon dsl-provider". Maybe you try "sudo ifup dsl-provider" for linking und "sudo ifdown dsl-provider" for unlinking. ;-)
